Pool building

Swimming in the open air – this is a given in summer. But in the cooler seasons, water and swimming enthusiasts usually have to pursue their hobby in the closed indoor pool. The Fächerbad in Karlsruhe put into operation a spectacular swimming pool with a retractable convertible roof. For this purpose, the existing swimming pool building was extensively renovated, converted and expanded under the leadership of R+P Architekten Karlsruhe. The result is impressive - not least thanks to the high-quality tiles from Villeroy&Boch, which create a true wellness atmosphere around the “Cabrio pool”.

Tiles from Villeroy&Boch create feel-good atmosphere in specular convertible pool

Outdoor pool enjoyment with rain protection – The light-flooded convertible pool is completely glazed and has direct access to the spacious outdoor area via sliding doors. Under the motto “Fresh air when the sun is shining – the top is closed when it is raining”, the pool becomes an outdoor pool in summer and in the transitional period on nice days with pleasant temperatures and little wind. There are two pools to choose from: The competition pool, with six 25-meter lanes and a water depth of 2.5 m, meets all the requirements of a training and competition facility for swimming – including seating for spectators. The new course pool is ideal for aqua fitness and swimming courses. Also new: a separate changing area with collective changing rooms, lockers, disabled changing rooms, changing rooms and shower rooms.

Cozy, warm and high-contrast tiles

The adjoining seating area for around 300 people offers plenty of space to relax and unwind – even in changeable summer weather. Tiles from Villeroy&Boch from the professional PRO ARCHITECTURA concept create a truly feel-good atmosphere here, giving the floor a wonderfully cozy warmth in a soft sandy tone. At the same time, the ceramic tiles impress in terms of functionality because they are non-slip, hard-wearing, quick to clean and particularly hygienic. A beautiful contrast is created with dark tiles from the PURE LINE porcelain stoneware series, which combine the puristic appearance of satin concrete with a variety of structures in a modern ceramic design. This meant that an unmistakable effect could be achieved through elaborate surface installations with different format variants on the walls.

The expansion of the fan pool complements the existing building from the 1980s, taking into account the mature landscape and the trees. The new hall naturally adapts to the structure, cubature and functionality of the existing building and develops it further in a contemporary way: the swimming pool extension with a joint to the existing 50-meter indoor pool takes up its alignments and continues the existing architectural concept.
