Retail/ Shop building

“Shopping without clear shop boundaries” – this is the motto of the concept of the EDEKA Center in Berlin Niederschönweide, which opened in June 2017. The highlight and core of the shopping center is a “pleasure island”, which expands the food offering to include a catering area, around which all other shop areas are arranged in a circle.

Functional and aesthetic tiles from Villeroy&Boch accentuate marketplace space at EDEKA Center

The design concept was developed by the architectural firm Valentina Kinzel from Schermbeck in North Rhine-Westphalia. It relies on wide aisles, low shelves and spacious service counters to create clarity in the 3,700 m² sales area. Materials such as wood and brick characterize the design and create the atmosphere of an original marketplace, which is accentuated with black elements and interpreted in a contemporary way.

Almost the entire floor area was designed with extremely thick porcelain stoneware tiles in the COSMO VISION design from Villeroy&Boch Tiles. The tiles in the 30 x 60 cm format are particularly robust and resilient with a thickness of 14 mm and are ideal for heavily frequented areas. The detailed look of COSMO VISION is based on a concrete with a coarse shell structure, which appears very modern and authentic at the same time in the colors light gray and medium gray.
