With the PROJECT collection, Villeroy&Boch Fliesen presents a smart solution for creating visually safe and barrier-free environments in public spaces. In line with DIN 18040-1 standards, PROJECT offers ceramic step edge markings that ensure safe navigation on stairs while seamlessly blending with contemporary architectural designs.

All step edges in publicly accessible buildings – whether individual steps or long staircases – must be clearly marked. PROJECT fulfils this requirement using 5 cm wide and 1 cm thick strips that create a minimum visual contrast of 0.4, determined using the Michelson formula based on luminous reflectance values. This ensures optimal visibility and orientation, especially in high-traffic areas such as stairwells, schools, healthcare facilities, and transit zones.

The markings are available in black and white and are crafted from monochrome, full-body coloured VilboStone porcelain stoneware, offering outstanding durability, hygiene, and long-lasting colour stability. Thanks to their material compatibility, they can be combined effortlessly with all floor tiles in the Villeroy&Boch Fliesen porcelain collections – enabling a unified design concept without compromising safety or aesthetics.
